Sun. 15. The weather is admirable, the sun is shining pleasantly, and our boys are enjoying it exceedingly. We left the landing about 11 A. M and kept on ascending the Tenesee, passed some very fine dwellings and farms but as a general thing the country, is very poor and looks inhospitable. We passed the standing piers of the destroyed bridge of the Mobile and Oho R. R. stopped after dark near the gun boats, without having met with any opposition. Mon. 16. The gunboats got the start of us this morning and we did not leave until after daylight. Went on till about noon when the gunboats returned and reported that Gen. Negley fought Van Dorn’s forces near Columbia, for three days and routed them completely, the boats arrived a little too late to capture some of the flying rebels at Perrysville.
