Wed. 18. About 9 A. M. general Asboth left for fort Hindman, and we pushed off from the landing on board the steamer Bostona No. 2. bound for Cairo. It began to rain this morning only slightly it is the first rain we have had on our trip. We had a pleasant time. Met several friends at Paducah. Arrived at Cairo about 5 P. M. I took Command of the regiment and marched it to our barracks. The people and every body was glad to see us. Thurs. 19. Had a cleaning up to do today. The weather is very good, yet we notice an impure atmosphere here it is not half as pleasant as our voyage was up the Tennessee. Two of my men, Weimann and Schmelzer were discharged and went home today. Fri. 20. The marines had a drill in front of our barracks, they are very good troops. Capt. McKelvey & I were out tonight.
