Wed. 8. Early this morning, it being the first hour, we stepped on shore at Columbus where we took beds at the Columbus Hotel, slept till 7 ½ A. M. had a poor breakfast, and started in search of our friends, whom we soon found and learned that our presence would not be required for a few days perhaps at the court martial, so I procured transportation again for us. and started back to Cairo about 10 A. M. where we arrived about 1 P. M. Went to the paymaster’s office where I learned that my Company had drawn its pay and that mine was also ready, I went into the private apartment and drew my money for five months and twelve days, which after deducting the government tax amounted to $686.60, this will do very well for me. I am going to pay all my debts and send the rest to my parents. We have marching orders for Vicksburg.
