Sun. 12. Had my men and all the bagage ready by nine o’clock A. M. to start. I found a good many of my old friends in the 14th Iowa. About 1 P. M. we marched on board the boat “Champion”, which left Cairo at 3 P. M. amid the farewell shouts of its citizens who were sorry to see us depart. We left some true friends behind us. Got acquainted with Captain Kegel of the turner regiment, had a pleasant time. At Columbus, I , lt Mayer and other officers were ordered to disembark to attend a court martial, I did not like this of course, lt. Kranz, left us at Cairo, on his way home, so that my Company is left without a commissioned officer. I may have to stay here for a few weeks. Staid with Mr. Rosenthal
