Thurs. 16 We slept on board the steamer Bostona No 2, and after seeing all our friends once more, we shoved off, got about 2 miles below town and were compelled by the thick fog to return to Columbus, where we remained until about 10 A. M. when we left for good. Saw Spencer and some of the other men at Island No 10, they seemed anxious to go with us. Spoke to some of the 38 Iowa at New Madrid they are comfortably situated. The boat ran very fast all night. Fri. 17. This morning upon waking I beheld the great southern metropolis Memphis, which has figured so extensively in the present rebellion. I took a walk up town after breakfast, saw some splendid buildings, saw the grand public park, where the statue of old Hickory looks seriously upon the visitors, it has the motto, “The federal Union, it must be preserved,” the word federal is partially defaced by some rebel villain.
