Sat. 18 Went to the Theatre last night, but saw poor acting, met my old schoolmate Jack Free there who is now engaged in business at Corinth. Had a great time in moving my bagage from one place to another. Stopped at the celebrated “Gayso House”, the largest hotel in the south, for only 15 minutes for which honor I had to pay the sum of one dollar, this is a great place to get one’s money, they hardly reckon by cents only dollars go here, if you desire to take a ride in a carriage, it will cost you only three dollars an hour, and every meal you eat form 50 cents to one dollar. The martial law has full sway here, and rigorously executed, yet with all this scarcely a day passes without hearing of some murder committed here. I am on board the steamer G. W. Graham. I went onto a big tear tonight with some friends.
