Mon. 20 Early this morning we touched at the well known port of Helena but the boat staid but a few minutes so that I did not get to see the place. The scenery along our journey is increasing in interest because it is increasing in beauty, grand plantations which a few years ago had hundreds of slaves are now deserted, and ruined. What palaces, what beautiful garden spots, the result of man’s industry are so wantonly destroyed by the cruel hand of Civil war. We passed the Yazoo, Pass White and Arkansas rivers, where at the mouth of which our gun boats are stationed. We passed towns and cities that were abandoned by the enemy. It is indeed sad to contemplate the amount of suffering that his war creates. We reached the town of Providence tonight.
