Tues. 21. Everything is in bloom here, what a difference between this place and the North. I saw the canal cut by our forces here to the lake. The ground is low, yet there are some pleasant residences here. The troops are leaving for Young’s Point. We left about half past eight o’clock this morning on our downward way. Arrived at Milliken’s Bend about noon where I saw a great many troops and generals. Saw my friend Milne who invited me to go to Young’s Point with him, I invited the rest of my friends and so we started landed at Duck Point where I saw a good many of my men, our regiment being at this place. From Young’s Point I saw the renowned city of Vicksburg, which is a very fine appearing city and does not look as formidable as most men at first supposed it does.
