Wed. 22. I had a nice chat with Mrs. Wittenmeyer the sanitary agent of the state of Iowa, she is a very fine woman, and is doing much good to the soldiers of our state. Slept with Milne. I went to this place to see the blockade run by our transports but they not being ready, it was postponed till tomorrow night. This night would have been a very propitious one for that purpose for it rained very hard. There are a great many troops camped here. I find that we are the 3 Brig of the 3d div of the 15 army corps dep. of the Tenn. We are looking for a speedy forward movement. Returned to my Company. Wed 22. Went back to Young’s Point this evening to see the transports run the blockade. About midnight they commenced running and the enemy, opened his batteries upon them with a tremendous fire, and kept it up till 2 A. M. It is not known with what result. The cannonading was terrible.
