Wed. 29 Early this morning half of the regiment was ordered out to work on the wagon road along the canal. After dinner I took out the other half and worked them till 5 P. M. when our part of the road was completed, and we returned to our Camp, here the men received their whiskey, which made them feel well, some felt too well, we took our supper, and started for our old Camp, where we arrived at dark pretty tired, but satisfied that we had performed our part nobly as men should do. The Col. complimented the men for their industry. I learned that Peter Bosten died today of inflammation of the bowels. Weather fine. Thurs. 30 Col. Geddes of the 8th Iowa, inspected and mustered us, today, and awarded my Company the highest praise for its soldiery bearing. We heard cannonading at Haines Bluffs. Buried Peter Bosten near Camp. Received friends
