Wednesday 27. Received information by a deserter, that the Confederates intend to make a break through our lines tonight, I think they will have a warm time if they attempt it, I hope they will make the attempt. Major O’Connor is keeping drunk. Slept on our arms all night. Rebs did not come. Thursday 28 I was made glad by the receipt of several letters from home. Things are going on here about the same as usual, we are firing a great deal, but the rebels are keeping very quiet. Weather warm. We are using the pick and shovel to good advantage by the day and at night in making trenches in which we expect to approach the rebel works under cover . Slept again on our arms without disturbance. Friday 29. I had charge of 80 men to build terra plains and embrazures for heavy cannon, which are here awaiting a position to open upon the rebel works they are parrott rifled guns, I worked tll late tonight. This evening the cannonading from our works was terrific and was kept up till quite late. Our gunboats kept shell going into the town all night. Wrote a long letter to Carrie today. The weather is very warm here now.
