Saturday 30 Went to our div. hosp. and saw Frank, who is getting better fast and intends to be with us in a few days. Our sutler arrived and I bought many things from him. Gen. Joe Johnston is reported in our rear with a force of 30.000 men, a great many rumors are in circulation concerning the condition of the besieged garrison, but none reliable. Sunday 31. We had divine service by our Chaplain in front of my quarters, the sermon was very impressive, while he was preaching, the cannon were sending their solid shot and their shell into the rebel works, the Chaplain delivered a very good discourse. Had a general inspection in which my Company received praise, the others were censured. I went out with a fatigue party worked nearly all night. We are gradually approaching the rebel works. (I mean Jun) June Monday 1. The heat is getting almost intolerable, the drops of perspiration are rolling down my body when I am lying still. I am afraid that the heat, the poor water the megre rations, and the hard work, will prove very deleterious to the health of our men. As yet the rebels show no sign of yielding. All our land and naval batteries opened on the works today, for one hour, with what effect is not known. Our Colonel has disgraced our reg. by his cowardly conduct, it’s no honor to belong to it.
