Monday 29 Nothing of special interest happened today. Went out on picket with my Company, at a point said to be the most important on the entire line. My men were very vigilant on the whole line all night. The grand round came along during the night. Tuesday 30 My men went to a house in this vicinity where they confiscated some hogs and a goat, we found everything broken to pieces in the house, at 4 P. M. we were relieved by Company E we returned to Camp. July Wednesday 1 This morning my Company was mustered by Colonel Hill, was busy all day in making out the muster and pay rolls and monthly returns. In the afternoon I went to see my sick men in the brigade hospital. I found Lieut Kranz quite sick, the rest are improving visited general Tuttle and Fred L. Dayton. Had a long talk. Thursday 2 Had very little work to do slept nearly all afternoon some of my men returned from the hospital. Friday 3 I was informed that the rebels have sent a flag of truce to general Grant proposing terms of surrender I hope the general will demand and accept only an unconditional surrender. We are all very anxious to hear from Vicksburg, the men feel well over the glorious news. Johnston is going to attack us soon.
