Wednesday 8 We left camp at 8 A.M. and travelled but half a mile where we formed in line of battle and remained here till 5 P.M. to the great joy of the men, who were glad to get a good rest. We are within one mile of Bolton station, where the different Corps, taking different roads marched toward Clinton. We passed to the left marched pretty fast, passed the 16 & 9 Corps travelled till 1 A.M. We were all very tired as we came to the Camp and fell asleep shortly after we halted. Thursday 9 This morning our troops began to move pretty early. I found that we had been camped but one mile from Clinton. Marched to the left of Clinton, the march was very severe on us on account of the tremendous heat. Found the rebels drawn up in line of battle a little after dinner. Skirmishing is going on continually Johnston is reported to have at least 40,000 men but if he escapes he must maneuver his forces skillfully. We remained in the timber all afternoon. We are only 7 miles from Jackson. The rebels shot one of general Osterhaus' orderlies, because they found a Commission for recruiting negroes, in his pocket. The general sent in a flag of truce, demanding the murderer, and
