Saturday 11 Some shells came whizzing along, over our heads, a few exploded near us without hurting any one. The rebels made a charge on our men, but were driven back with great loss to them. About 25 mounted rebels made a dash at our foraging train of our brigade, near this place. It was under the command of Lieut Dugan, they captured the train and most of the men, the men were walking along without arms (which they placed in the wagons) some were running into the houses close by, others walked into the cornfields, and a few were with the train, so when the rebels came upon them, they could not defend themselves. Lt. Dugan was wounded, but escaped. I lost two of my best men John Hill and John Froehner. Sunday 12. We were ready to advance on the enemy's works at 7 A.M. Cannonading commenced at 8 A.M. some shells and shots passed over us to our annoyance. No advance was made today. I spent the day in reading. Monday 13 Firing as usual with no important results. The weather is very warm and the water is very scarce, this is an unhealthy locality. The rebels have put dead animals in all the water & wells in this vicinity. Do not feel quite well.
