Tuesday 14 Received some good news from our Eastern army it gave the rebels under Gen. Lee a glorious whipping at Gettysburg Pa. The report says Lee's army will be annihilated. Glory and Honor to God in the Highest! A victory at last for the army of the Potomac. Gen. Meade commanded it, having superseded Gen Hooker a few days before the battle. Wednesday 15 Went out to our division hospital where I had a good shave and wash. Learned that we are going to change our position in front of the rebel works. Received orders to full in under arms. Left our Camp at dusk, and took our position in front of the rebel works, received orders to remain under arm all night. Relieved Gen Osterhaus. Thursday 16 Moved forward into our rifle pits this morning, worked hard throwing up some breast works, received orders to fall in under arms, where we are now awaiting further orders. The balls are flying pretty thick around us The battle is raging furiously on our left, it ceased in 15 minutes - all is quiet again. My company went on picket tonight, took a very advanced position, never got so close to the rebels before, my men were posted only 5 - 8 yds from the rebel pickets. Worked hard all night building a small fort, large enough to protect us from the rebel sharpshooters.
