institutions. The well has plenty of water and pretty good water too, we tried a batch of bread in our oven this evening and find that it is excellent, it makes the men feel all right and hope it will improve them. Monday 17 I took a ride over the country, visited Mr. Trible's family for which I had some letters; they were very glad to see me, I took dinner with them. I also visited Mr. Cameron, where I found Miss N. Balls for whom I also had a letter. Had a pleasant visit. Tuesday 18 I am making some more improvements around my tent, have commenced laying a floor, and pavement, am having an arbor built and so on, to make myself comfortable. It rained quite hard today. We have been blessed with a number of camp orders. A few men of our regiment have been court martialed for various misdemeanors and punished, among whom is Constantin Hinkel who was accused by Lt. Mayer of gambling, he was reduced to the ranks. Priv. H. Lange appointed in his place. Wednesday 19 This morning we had a general inspection of the regiment it passed off very satisfactorily, rec'd a few northern papers, which speak very encouragingly of our internal and external affairs. May the Great Jehovah enlighten the people, that they may act properly in this crisis
