Thursday 20 We had a severe rain storm this forenoon, I did some writing. Commenced drilling my non-com'd officers, it is very necessary, for they are quite far back in drill, they never were properly instructed. Friday 21. My friend Lt. E. B. Soper went home on a sick leave. I was brigade officer of the day, did considerable riding. The weather was quite warm. News from the North is not of any importance, it seems that the Copperheads of South English Keokuk Co. Iowa, were dispersed without bloodshed; about 100 pr. cent of them ought to have been killed, that would have put a stop to all riots in our state. A Copperhead is a double traitor to this Country. Saturday 22. Had a general cleaning up in Camp. Answered a few letters which I received today. Mayer's black servant "Dave," whom he basely left at Vicksburg, lies in his quarters very sick. I am afraid he will die. I think Mayer is the cause of his suffering . The weather is extremely warm. Sunday 23. "Dave" died early this morning; he was buried by his black friends this morning, on a neighboring hill, which I selected. Poor fellow!, short was your liberty on earth now it is eternal! This was an unsual quiet Sabbath in Camp. Our Chaplain is absent with leave.
