Monday 24 Received some salutary orders from corps head quarters. General Sherman talks like a constitutional lawyer, I love him as a general; he is highly appreciated by the people here; it is said that he was a military professor in one of the academies of this state before the rebellion broke out, he is therefore best conversant with this state of any man in our army. I hope he may live long. Tuesday 25 There is considerable talk, about nominating Gen. Tuttle for Governor of Iowa, by the Copperheads, spuriously called Democrats. He says that he will not accept the nomination from that party under any circumstances whatever, he is right. If he does accept it, he will be politically decapitated. Wednesday 26. Col. Stone of the 22'd Iowa Inf. has been nominated by the Republican party, for governor of the state of Iowa, he is highly commended by those who know him, I hope he will be elected. A great number of soldiers in this vicinity are dying off. Dysentery and fever are the prevailing diseases. Thursday 27. My 1st Sgt. F. S. Koehler is sick with diarrhoea. Most of the officers present in our reg't are sick. I enjoy good health and hope I may continue to do so. Nothing superior to health.
