September Tuesday 1. Received news of a dreadful massacre of the inhabitants of the city of Lawrence in Kansas, by the guerrillas under the highway robber Quantrill. They killed 180 people and destroyed the city This is the most cruel outrage that happened during this war. To Kill 180 inoffensive citizens, oh horror. But perhaps those murderers will be caught, and then they shall be punished, as a warning to others. Wednesday 2. Received orders from corps head quarters to hold ourselves in readiness, for a review every Thursday. General Asboth has assumed command of our division, he is very much esteemed by those who know him. I knew him in Columbus Ky. he recognized me and was glad to see me. It suits me to have him here, he is a thorough soldier. Thursday 3. Made preparation for our brigade review formed in line at 4 P.M. Waited patiently for one hour, when Gens. Sherman and Asboth made their appearance, accompanied by their staffs. They received the brigade and ordered to have each regiment to conclude by having a dress parade; which was done satisfactorily.
