Sunday 13. Had an inspection of our regiment this morning. I found a number of guns in poor order, gave some of the men a scolding for not having their arms and accoutrements in good order. I think if I could command this regiment for about three months, I could infuse a spirit of morale into it, that would bring it out all right. Monday 14 We have a contract surgeon in our regiment now, named Dixon. He takes hold of his business as a thorough workman should. I am glad of it, for our sick have been culpably neglected for the last month. Tuesday 15. This morning Cols. Hill and Geddes and myself started over to Division Head Quarters after meeting the general there, we waited patiently two hours to have him go with us to select a location for his Head Quarters and our regimental camp. Finally we started and rode over the neighboring country. The general is a hard rider and it was quite severe on me to ride with him. We were in the saddle nearly 6 hours, and returned to camp without having found suitable ground for our camp.
