October Thursday 1. Worked at making out my clothing returns. The weather is magnificent. Went over to colonel Geddes, and took a lesson in sword exercise. It appears from late accounts from general Rosencranz that he was not defeated but, simply retreated to his first position, the loss on both sides must have been 30,000. Friday 2. General Grant has issued an order prohibiting Commissaries of subsistance to issue rations to the citizens here unless they take the oath of allegiance to our government as the majority of them refused to do so they deserve to starve, for being so irreconcileable. It may be that this war will be a protracted one yet, and that we may not expect to have a peace for years to come, well I guess we may as well fight as to do anything else in this age of the world all things look gloomy anyhow, everything appears to assume a very discouraging look, the great doctrines of our Savior do not receive that attention which they deserve, very few live up to them.
