1863-10-09 -- 1863-10-11

Friday 9.  This day I improved by erecting a small house, over which I stretched my tent, and placed bunks inside of it, so that I am very easily situated, it seems very much like home.  A soldier can make his life a very pleasant one by a little exertion, our men are preparing their tents very nicely to prevent cold from entering them.  

Saturday 10.  I received several papers, and some letters from home.  Also one for Miss Trible which I delivered to her.  Capt Mueller & Lt. Mayer accompanied me to Trible’s.  The news concerning Gen. Rosencrans, is not very cheering for us, but our reinforcements are reaching him so that he will soon be able to whip the combined forces of the entire confederacy.  The guerrillas in this neighborhood are again showing themselves, shooting at some of our men which they fortunately miss.  

Sunday 11.  Had a very fine inspection of my company.  A few days ago all our sick men were sent to the rear.  I spent partt of this holy day in writing letters.  This evening while I was at Capt. Mueller’s the order came from Hd.Qrs. to have ourselves ready for an attack to be made by 6000 rebels tonight or tomorrow morning.
