the rebels are, collecting a strong force of their exchanged prisoners. We reached camp at 9 P.M. having marched twenty-one miles with very little rest; we are tired and foot sore, I feel quite exhausted, the reason is I think to be found in this: we have been in camp for the last two months and most of the men have been "under the weather", and have not gained much strength. Those who have not been ill, have become delicate, in camp; I am sure that the majority of the men are poorly prepared for a long journey. Received intelligence that Fredric Holtz, of my co. died at Memphis Tenn. Sept. 18 of Chronic Diarrhea. Received a peculiar letter from a friend at my parent’s home. Left 15 men sick, in the rear, they were sent to Vicksburg. Capt. M. Mueller, of the 6th Ind. battery, visits me frequently, he is a clever man, and I begin to appreciate him. Sought my bed after a small supper, glad to get rest. Friday 16 Rose at four o’clock this morning. I feel all right again, with the exception of sore feet, caused by wearing hard boots. We did not leave camp until 8 o’clock A.M. on account of waiting for the result of a small skirmish which took place, between our advance and the enemy. The belief is that we will have a battle today, the rebels are reported in force
