Wednesday 21. This day we spent in arranging our camp. I made myself as comfortable as I possibly could in my small wedge tent. My men have to be out without any shelter, they feel the need of tents very much, but I hope to get tents for them soon. Jacob Hess, and Franz Peterka, two of my furloughed men returned August Othner remained at home sick. I was informed that a number of falsehoods are in circulation in Muscatine, concerning myself and my company. Thursday 22 Prepared my pay rolls which took me the greater part of the day. Was ordered to make out furloughs for two of my men. I intend to send Frank S. Koehler and Lorenz Goetzmann, home on furlough. Was ordered to report myself at Brig. Headquarters, as Brig. Off. of the day. Put out the countersign, at each post, and returned to my tent. It rained hard all night. I pity my men, who are exposed to the storm, for they are without shelter. Friday 23. It kept on raining today to my great annoyance, and I know to the injury of my men. Who are standing about the fire cold, wet, and hungry. I have made out a requisition for new tents, but our quartermaster is so indolent that I fear I cannot get them.
