Saturday 24 Our brigade quartermaster went to Vicksburg yesterday to get tents for us, he returned this afternoon bringing some secondhand ones. I took four Sibley tents for my men, and one small tent for myself, they are not very good yet they are better than none. Had the ground and poles prepared to put them up tomorrow. It is a work of necessity. Sunday 25 As indicated above, I went to work and put up my tent and my men pitched their tents. The weather has suddenly changed, so much so that I feel the cold as severely, as I would in winter in Iowa; it is because the atmosphere here is moister than in Iowa, producing more fever. The citizens about here state that the present season is uncommonly sickly. Engaged Captain Mueller’s negro to put up a chimney and fire place for me; it is going to be a double one, one in my Kitchen, the other in my tent. I am sorry that I have to have it done on Sunday, yet I believe I am doing my duty in preserving my health which God has been merciful enough to bestow on me. The men are also erecting fireplaces in their tents. A fire has almost become indispensable at present. Worked quite hard all day but did not finish.
