Friday 30 Yesterday our regiment was paid up to August 31st by Major W. T. Clark. Lt. Mayer made quite a row on account of being reported absent without leave on the minute roll, but he soon discovered that he was correctly reported. Lt. Soper came to see me yesterday having returned just from home. He gave me an interesting account of his visit, his hand is healed, but several of his fingers are stiff, but do not prevent him from writing. I am glad his injury is not greater. Major Keeler, who has been recommended for the position of Lt. Col. of our regiment, has been appointed division provost marshall of our division. He will soon be Chief of staff. The weather is unpleasant, it rained. Saturday 31. Finished my rolls this morning early. This is a pleasant day. We had muster this morning, by Lt. Col. John H. Stibbs of the 12th Iowa. He was formerly orderly sergeant of Company K Iowa 1st of which Company I was a member, he is a first rate man. He expressed himself very much satisfied with my company. My men were out in good time. I devoted this day partly to writing letters. F. S. Koehler and L. Goetzmann started for Muscatine. I sent a sword and $218.00 with Frank, for my parents.
