Monday 2 My muster and pay rolls were returned, my company was marked number one in everything. Had my Clothing Return made out. Sent a certificate to account for the destroyed property. My next sketch is of the officer next in rank to our Colonel, who is Major William B. Keeler. He is from Ohio, has lived a good many years in Muscatine, where he was the city auctioneer. I do not believe that he has been very successful in business. His children used to attend my school. He is a good, honest man and a good soldier. His politics I do not admire, he is a rabid Know Nothing, although that party is dead, yet he still holds to its teachings. He was Captain of Company A. is recommended for Lt. Col. and detached from the regiment as division provost marshall. He has a pretty good education and is an energetic go-ahead man. He is a well built man, tall and strong, and presents a commanding appearance. I believe if he gets the proper appointments, he will distinguish himself in the field. He was at one time one of Colonel Hill’s enemy’s, but now their exists apparently a firm friendship between them. He was formerly provost marshall at Cairo. I believe he is very glad that he is out of our regiment.
