and attempts to treat his men properly , is honest and obliging. He is somewhat reserved in his manners with others. He tries to excel in whatever he undertakes, and aims to execute whatever he begins. If his history should be written, it would be voluminous and startling. He has endured a great many privations and hardships but has managed to climb up higher from day to day, and if God permits him to live, intends to prove a blessing to his fellow men, and force them to acknowledge that he has done his part to reform many existing abuses and aided the inculcation of true Christian principles, and the advance of civilization. I hope, and pray that God may assist him in this resolution. Friday 6. I did not rise early this morning because, I felt unwell, having caught cold yesterday in the rain. Preparations for a movement, are again being made. It is reported that we leave for Memphis tomorrow morning. I wrote a number of letters and got my things ready for the move. Bought me a pair of boots. My friend E. B. Soper, has been promoted to atg ast. adj. general of our brigade. Success to him. Well, we leave tomorrow morning at 7 o’clock, we shall see broader scenes & gather more experience.
