Saturday 7. We left our camp early this morning for Vicksburg, marched briskly but arrived in the city at noon, later than I expected. I instantly after our arrival looked up my convalescents, and got orders for them to report to the comp. While I was absent the regiment was marched on board the stern wheel steamer “Adriatic”. Made several purchases in town. I observed that Vicksburg has been renovated, and looks very much improved. The fortifications about town are contracted, so that several small divisions or about 10,000 men can easily hold them against ten times that number. There are a number of German families here, I got acquainted with a few of them. Went on board the boat tired, took state room number seventeen in company with Lt Porter. Lt Joseph Mayer cut a big swell in town, he managed to get a detail from Brigade Head Quarters, as Assistant Inspector General. He has figured about until he succeeded in being detached from the Company and the regiment, he has worked hard for it and gained it, yet he will certainly fail in this as he is incompetent.
