Thursday 12. I remained in bed until after dinner when Lt. Porter my room-mate, informed me that we were near Memphis. I got up, after the boat had landed, packed my bagage, and sent it to our wagon. Finally it was decided that we should remain on board the boat during the night. I engaged a bed from the steward, and retired to rest. Friday 13. Early this morning we marched through the city of Memphis, to the suburbs of the city a distance of two miles where, we camped. Here all was confusion for a while again as is usual on such occasions, in finding my goods, laying out the camp, pitching our tents &co. We soon found ourselves quite comfortable however. We are camped on a pleasant hill, near a small creek, I believe the intention is to place our division along the R.R. between here and Corinth, to preserve it against the rebel raiding cavalry, which seems to be very active at present, and designs to do mischief. General Tuttle’s Head Quarters are going to be at Lagrange. Some say we are going to be stationed at Middleton. Restaurants charge enormous prices for meals here.
