Saturday 14. Had considerable trouble with a few of my men, who had absented themselves without leave, and returned to camp beastly drunk. I punished them severely though. It is so unpleasant for me however to punish men, yet I know it must be done or we can have no discipline in the Company. I was in town several times today, purchased a trunk shoulderstraps, and provisions. In the evening I saw my friend Miss Carrie E. Martin, the music teacher, she was glad to see me, and I spent a half hour quite pleasantly in her society. Sunday 15 Had to go through inspection, and policing this morning after we had been called in line of battle at 2½ o’clock A.M. It seems that a scare of some kind got out, and we had to prepare for an attack. The paymaster is near here, paying some of the troops in our brigade, we will receive our pay this evening or tomorrow. We received and issued clothing. Got new tents also, and camp & garrison equipage. Monday 16. I went to town and made several purchases, it is strange what expenses an officer has when he gets into a city,
