on board at Middleton, proceeded cautiously along the road until we arrived within a few miles of Saulsburg, where we were informed that Colon’l Hatch had whipped the rebels and had forced them to leave, this compelled us to return. We were nearly certain this time of seeing the enemy but were again disappointed, well it is all right. Took our goods from the fort, and arranged our quarters for a long rest, I think the rebels will not molest us for some time to come. Saturday 5 Again the rebels are on the move attempting to do mischief. They are trying to capture the colored garrison at Moscow, the 2d West Tenn. Inf, but the negroes have repulsed them with great loss, several times. The rebels destroyed a small bridge over Wolf River, but Col Hatch engaged them and drove them away. But I am sorry to record the dangerous wounding of the above named gallant officer, the ball passed through his right lung. Colonel Hatch is one of the best officers in the cavalry service, he has fought the rebels frequently and has always been victorious. He has certainly earned promotion before many men who have been promoted over him.
