He has commanded a brigade of cavalry for a long time, he was formerly commander of the celebrated 2d Iowa cavalry. He is a citizen of Muscatine Iowa. All loyal men feel proud of him, and pray that his life may be spared for the benefit of our country. His countrymen’s lasting gratitude is due him for his skill and heroism. Although his wound is dangerous and certainly painful yet hopes of his recovery are entertained by those who are best able to judge of his injury. Sunday 6 The rebels are still on the road near Collierville but do not think that they will seriously molest that place, since they were gloriously whipped there a short time ago. I commenced boarding at Lt. Kern’s. I returned my cook to the company, for duty on the 2d inst. This day I should have spent differently, yet the weather or my evil genius inclined me to spend it foolishly at Lt Kern’s quarters. The evening I spent at Dr. Hofmeister’s, I sat up very late, too late I fear for the good of my health. We had a dress parade today the first we have had for a long time. Well, there is really no use in having parade when the men must go on duty every other day.
