Wednesday 9 Made out different reports and papers this morning. Frank who had gone to Memphis returned this afternoon, with a large box of goods, which he has brought from Muscatine, containing several articles of clothing, eatables &co. for the men, also a small box for myself, the contents of which is mixed, Best of the lot are some shirts and gauntlets. Even some potatoes were sent in the box, but I must confess that I would prefer almost anything else in their place. I also received a good likeness of my Carrie, which I prize very highly. I put up my stove today, it makes my tent very comfortable. Thursday 10 Received news of the organization of our national congress at Washington D. C. There was a little trouble at first, but it was successfully overcome. Mr. Colfax is elected speaker of the house We are looking forward with some anxiety, to the president’s message the conservatives have great hopes of it being a very pacifying document. Friday 11 I was officer of the day, rode outside of our lines, accompanied by my escort and visited some citizens who were very kind to me. Made the acquaintance of a number of loyal people, who talk all right, but they may try to deceive me
