on a by road, where we halted, upon examining the neighborhood we discovered signs of prowling guerrillas, yet could not see any of the rascals. We found corn and fodder, loaded our teams with it, with the exception of one wagon which we loaded with hogs, geese &co. We had a splendid time. Some of the ladies whom we saw, did not like us and expressed great indignation at our doings, yet we did not trouble them by replies, but pursued the even tenor of our way. Made the acquaintance of the girl whom a negro (who was shot for it) violated, she looks quite well, and I feel sorry she was so badly used by that black scoundrel, he received his deserts however. It was quite late when we arrived safe in camp. I was very well pleased with the expedition and so was every one. Tuesday 15 We divided our pork this morning. I received sufficient to do me and my mess for a long time. I gave the majority of our officers a piece. Our chaplain was not present and therefore did not receive a piece. Other news is quite scarce, our armies are resting at present.
