Monday 21 I received an invitation to go to a party to be given at Brigade Head Quarters, on Christmas eve but I do not intend to go, on account of the treatment I received from certain officers yesterday. - Lt. Kern visited me today and I told him in plain words, what I thought of his conduct yesterday. He took it all in good part, and apologized to me. He cried, because I should not think him my friend. I forgave him, and now I feel like looking upon him as my firm friend again, Lt. Soper also came this evening, and apologized to me for his conduct towards me yesterday, he attributed it altogether to Lt. Mayer. He also urged me to attend the party. I know that I love my friends as much as any one can love his friends, there is no person whom I appreciate more highly than a noble hearted, firm, true friend, and nothing can cause me more grief than when I find that a friend in whom I had the greatest confidence deserts me, and foolishly betrays me. I have never had any friends who did more for me than I did for them. What is a man without friends?
