Tuesday 22 I am officer of the day today. Lt. Stearns came to me and urged me to attend the party to be given at Head Quarters tomorrow evening. I have a mind to go. Lt. Kern and I went outside of the lines to look up some good looking young ladies. We found but very few who are even passable. The Lt. finally concluded to ask one who is rather clumsy, and does not look very well, yet it is the best one we could find. We went to her in the evening and he engaged her, I did not see one that I would like to escort to the party, so I did not engage any. These Tennessee ladies do not possess any charm for me. An expedition has again moved towards Jackson Tenn. to capture General Forrest and his troops, our columns are moving against him from several roads, and if it is possible for them to surround him the chances for his capture are good but I fear that he is too wily for them and will again escape. I have recently read the message of Jeff Davis to this congress, it is very desponding in its tone, but I fear the war will go on nevertheless with increased vigor by the rebels.
