Tuesday 29 Last night I had the pleasure of sleeping in an old fashioned feather bed, in the house of Mr. Carson, a splendid man, I felt all right this morning. I got a good breakfast there. Went to my quarters and wrote in my journal. Took a walk about town, looked at the fort and the stockade erected here, they are in pretty good condition, pretty well got up. Took dinner at Mr. Carson’s a very fine dinner too. We had a goose, turnips, pork, biscuit, corn bread, gravy, and milk for dinner. After dinner I took a nap, and before I got up I heard the order to fall in, given. We left Middleton about three P.M. and arrived at Pocahontas a little after sunset. We feel very much satisfied, that we are again at our homes. No important change has taken place here during our absence. I wrote and read till quite late tonight before I could sleep, or determine to go to bed, tonight I have to sleep on a hard bed, I fear that last night’s sleeping in a feather bed spoiled me. The weather here is beautiful. I learned that the 8th and 12th Iowa Inf. regiments are ready to be mustered as veteran regiments.
