in letters of gold on the nation’s monument of its fallen heroes. The rebellion has been pressed into a smaller compass, so that if the same success crowns our arms the coming year as it did the closing one, we can with a certainty have peace before the coming year shall have run its course. The fabulous prices that everything commands in the Confederacy, the worthlessness of the rebel currency, and the scarcity of the provisions and clothing in the rebel states indicate the speedy explosion of the entire Confederacy. What a shout of joy will there ascend from the numerous throats of loyal freemen, when the starry banner of liberty shall again wave in triumph over every inch of American soil, over a peaceful and united nation. And as certain as the sun shines on our earth, so certain shall this come to pass. Departed heroes, your sacrifice has not been in vain, your blood helped to cleanse our nation, and our land shall rise regenerated, the true house of Liberty.
