Our chaplain I cannot omit to record some of the good traits of our Chaplain F. W. Evans, he is I think a true Christian, zealous in the discharge of his duties as our spiritual adviser, obliging and kind to all with whom he has intercourse. He is a self made man, possesses good sound sense, and is well posted in religious matters. He can preach an interesting and instructive sermon, and has good social qualities. He is a little eccentric, and when attacked with sarcasm and irony as is frequently the case in our regiment, he can make as witty a repartee as any one, and generally whips his antagonist with his own weapons. He is universally esteemed by the men. He was pastor of the M. E. Church at Muscatine for several years, and gave general satisfaction. He is a small man, about 5 ft. 4 in. and weighs about 130 lbs. Although the army is as a general thing very little improved by chaplains, yet if the chaplains were all as good as ours, more good would be done.
