Dec 31, 1942 Tucson, Arizona Dear Dad and Mom: Well her it is New Years Eve and I'm really spending a quiet one here on the field. The place is deserted most everyone went to town but the place will be so jammed that it wouldn't be much fun. We got paid today. i got the most I've ever received in the army $62.77 after everything was out. I got $5.20 for corporal from the 18th of Nov. on to the last of the month difference between [P.F.C.'s] pay. That sounds kind of awkward but maybe you'll get what I mean. My good luck held I don't have to work again tomorrow, they selected the alert crew from the bunch who were late coming back from furlougho came in late on pass etc. there is just a skeleton crew working. I think I'll write letters and wash some clothes, gosh I've got enough letters to try and answer. Got your letter wtih the card in it, he was a very good friend at Ship. Field. Comes from Minneapolis was a very good student in school. He didn't write anything on it so I don't know what he is doing but think I will write someday. Enjoyed the little poem about the ice on the trees. i could just see it. I really get a kick out of the clippings you send. I enjoy that one in the Cedar Rapids paper about the farm life. Finally got my papers signed after carrying them around wtih me for two or three days. hope there wasn't too much hurry about them. I looked all over the field for a notary but found one at the Red Cross office. It is a
