Jan. 4, 1942 Tucson, Ariz. Dear Dad + Mom: Its been rather a disagreeable day here this morning the wind blew and the dust rolled just like Texas and the air was heavy with it, about noon it rained and cleared the air but turned quite cool however this evening it seems to be warming up a bit and it looks favorable for tomorrow. I think at last we have old 136 our oldest ship ready to fly there have been many tedious jobs on it such as changing the gas tanks. The tanks are called self sealing, they are a heavy rubber composition, which in the event it is punctured will seal itself and very little gas will be lost + fire hazard practically eliminated. This adds greatly to the weight of a ship but it is quite a safety measure. Played pinnochle again tonight we were lucky and won two out of three games, the two nights preceeding we played we lost 2 out of 3. I should have written letters instead but I PUT IT OFF. When we work nights I wont find any time for it either and we change tomorrow evening, always have to work twenty four hours in a stretch when we go on night duty and I dread it. I almost had to be C.Q tomorrow but a buddie of mine is on [illegible] and they gave him
