Feb. 1, 1943 Tucson, Ariz. Dear Dad and Mom: I must begin with an apology. I was so sure I remembered leaving my watch home on the dresser that I could just see it but I have it with me, while getting ready to come back I put it in my travelling kit. Im very sorry for the bad week Ive caused you, wondering what had happened to it, or if I'd lost it, or it had been stolen, or what but I have the watch okay safe and sound. I expect you have heard long ago about the plane crashing into the mess hall. It was a transient ship, not a B-24 which was taking off and one of the motors quit, it just cleared a parachute tower and hit the consoladated mess where I ate this summer and completely burned it, however the planes didnt spread so that was fortunate. One of the fellows in the barracks is very handy with tools and has a lot of brass. he goes over to the utilities department and uses their power tools and builds foot lockers. All the civilians who work there stand around and watch him never questioning whether he should be there or not. I think I'll buy one as I hate living out of a barracks bag, nothing is where you can find it and is always in a mess. Barracks bags are handy for dirty clothes and shoes etc.
