March 11, 1943 Tuscon, Arizona Dear Dad + Mom: Today has been cold, wore my sheep skin lined leather jacket all day long. It seems the cold bites right in. Got a letter from you today, how winter hangs on with you. Got my hair cut last night by a little barber in our barracks. I think its the best hair cut Ive had since Ive been in the army. He used to run two shops in New York City. He is a comical little fellow, Donato Donifrio about 5'-2" and weighs perhaps 130 lbs. He trimmed my mustache too said I let it grow too long, "looked like Chinese" he said. He only charged 35¢ same as the P.X. We didnt fly much today, weather was bad and considerable maintenance work. I had to replace a brake, patch a deicer boot, put on a new gas tank cap. Painted in a few spots where the paint had peeled off, they have been going to get it done for a long time. Had a nice letter from [Ri?] yesterday she said she had seen you folds not so long ago. It doesnt seem possible that her kids can be big enough to be left alone and do chores. Today I had something good for dinner Chinese lettuce salad. I always liked it but this tasted particularly good, fixed with oil dressing
