March 17, 1943 Tucson, Arizona Dear Dad & Mom: I'm writing this out on the line in a spare moment. Im sitting in the radio operators seat of my plane and using his desk makes a good quiet spot [illegible] so far no one has disturbed me. Meant to write last night but got into a pinnochle game and it was lights out before I knew it. We have to do an hours calesthentics or supervised exercise every day now or we are not allowed passes. It seems we would get enough exercise but they seem to think not. Yesterday I did two hours so got that out of the way it was kind of silly we played soft ball and went around the obstacle course when we should have been working Your box of cookies came yesterday and in fine shape. They were surely good, they arent all gone yet but there is certainly a big hole in the contents. Also got your letter with the one from Greening enclosed and the Union. Greenings letter had the $3 in it we bet on the time the war would be over. Thanks heaps for the cookies. Helped change two tires yesterday which were wearing down pretty thin on one of the ships They dont last very long and its no wonder the way they get set down sometimes you can hear them squeek just like someone jamming on their
