March 30, 1943 Tucson, Arizona Dear Dad + Mom: Well tomorrow is the day every soldier looks forward to, pay day. Will just get my straight base pay tomorrow no flying pay that will come later in the month. I dont remember you saying whether or not you got the $50 money order I sent last month after the $80 one. $130 bucks out of a months pay isn't a bad saving I dont think. May not send that much this month as I ran short this month. Ill bet Im listening to the same radio program you are tonight. The Shadow, in "Death comes to the magician". Im only hearing part of it as another radio is blaring and a card game is in progress a couple of bunks away. Got a letter from you the [Union?] and a box of cookies from Aunt Jennie. They were very good and I must writes at once and thank her for them. Several of the guys are sick today got some thing that didnt agree with them at the mess hall I guess its nothing serious, a mild touch of ptomaine poisoning perhaps. They are all up and around but not feeling so hot. They have K.Ps picked for the train ride already the fellows who didnt turn in their sheets and pillow cases on time are the goats. That is a heck of a job anytime but on the train it is doubly rough. It will be a long train ride and I dont envy it to the fellows. Im going to fly and it will only take a few hours while on the train it will take days.
