May 3, 1943 Pocatillo, Idaho Dear Dad & Mom, Well I've missed a couple of days haven't I. Saturday night I went into town with a couple of guys, saw one of Gildersleeves pictures, quite funny. Yesterday I had an inspection that took until midnight, was a darn good one tho, the guards inspection only wrote up three minor defects on the whole ship, which is exceptional. My furlough has been signed by the engineering officer and I have turned it into the orderly room. Has to be affirmed by the commanding officer and I think he will do it all right. Have in a request for "per diem" for my trip to Sacramento, the Army pays expenses of $6 per day which I would just as soon get as not $15 ain't hay. I am now master sergeant which is the highest ranking non commissioned officer. I got it yesterday, was quite surprised but I'm glad to get it and hope I can hold my job. It pays $138 per month, but if I was only getting flying time now I'd be getting $207 which would be a mighty good job. I now have six stripes [ranking symbol], instead of the three I had when home. Meant to get a money order today but the post office was jammed full so I couldn't get close
