July 4, 1943 Pacatello, Idaho Dear Dad, Mother + Grandma: I believe this is the coolest fourth Ive ever spent, a jacket is very comfortable here today. Cant say it the quietest because the noise of the B-24's being preflighted would drowned out the noise made by firecrackers and nigger chasers other years. Yesterday was my anniversary for having finished A.M school as I look back it doesnt seem that long in some ways but in others an age. One thing when I left Sheppard Field I figured a Master Sergeant was just under the general but now I dont think they are so much. Tonight I am going out to dinner a friend has an apartment in town and says his wife is the best chicken fryer in the country anyhow I know it will be good and I will enjoy it very much. It will be a treat to eat home cooked food. I am enclosing a picture that was in our field paper "The Bombardier" you wont be able to see any faces but I am that big shadow
