July 29, 1943 Pocatillo, Idaho Dear Dad, Mom, Grandma: Will try and write and listen to our accordion player at the same time so sont be surprised if this is a little jumbled. Still hot out here but not so bad as it was last week. Hasnt rained for several days now and things are really looking dry, hills are very brown and burn like tinder Almost every day we can see a grass fire from camp, some quite extreme ones too. We have a whole lot of new crews in here to train and is that a headache. Whenever a new bunch starts, there are generators, starters brakes, tires, etc that have to be changed as the beginners are really rough on them. Guess they must learn tho. Went swimming yesterday for my calesthentics, went by G. I truck to a pool about fifteen miles away. Enjoyed the swim very much water comes from a hot sporing and is tempered by mixing it with well water. Had to rent a pair of trunks got a pair just between a pup tent and an awning in size.
